Daily Multivitamin Intake – What You Need to Know (Part 2)

Continuing with the first part of this two-part article series regarding Vitamin D, this particular nutrient brings a level of necessary balance to your digestive system. And for those that have experienced any issues with this part of their bodies, then you already know how vital a health flowing system is to your everyday lives. Absence of it can prompt irritation, which might be the reason for ongoing problems. Provided that getting with the fundamental portions of Vitamin D can be troublesome – multivitamins make things easier in terms of digesting the proper amounts into your system.

Occasional Upset Stomach

The gastrointestinal system, which basically handles how the body digests food (to keep things simple), may be affected if you begin to consume more nutrients than the body requires.  Nothing serious, but you may experience a bit of stomach discomfort from the excess introduced into the system. Nausea from high amounts of multivitamin in your body is just a sign that you body does not require the additional nutrients found taking a daily multivitamin. At that point, it’s our jobs to listen to our bodies, because more times than not, there will be plenty of symptoms/signs providing answers to whether we actually need additional amounts of nutrients or not.

Here's a brief list of the various vitamins and minerals found in the majority of multivitamins and their possible symptoms associated from elevated levels of nutrients and the effects on the gastrointestinal system:

Calcium: constipation

Iron: diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and constipation

Magnesium: diarrhea, nausea, abdominal cramps

Vitamin C: diarrhea, nausea, abdominal cramps

Zinc: nausea, gastric distress, vomiting and loss of appetite

One of the main reasons it is highly suggested to look for multivitamins that are close to 100% of the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA), is because it ultimately regulates the levels that the body requires and doesn’t overload the system; which could lead to the occasional upset stomach.

Energy Levels

There is no guarantee that those who start taking a multivitamin and have a particular deficiency would notice a difference in their level of energy. In a 2020 trial, 82 healthy, active adults were given either a placebo or a multivitamin, with 40 of them choosing the placebo. After approximately one month, they discovered that multivitamins boosted guys' carbohydrate digestion and energy expenditure during a 10-minute workout. Females who took multivitamins reported less stress and mental fatigue; they also felt less physically exhausted after 30 minutes of activity. Additionally, some deficiencies, like an iron deficit, might lower your energy levels and make you feel lethargic and exhausted. Therefore, depending on your lifestyle or health issues, you may benefit form a daily multivitamin, which are ultimately designed to provide the nutrients in which your body is currently lacking.

Choose Wisely – Focus on Nutrients That YOU May Need

For example, it has been proven that due to their eating habits, vegetarians and vegans are prone to a lack of iron, solely from the absence of meat products. Yes, there are other sources that provide plenty of iron, however, unless you understand the levels in these different food sources, then they may lack the daily requirements our bodies need.

As previously mentioned, our bodies are constantly speaking with us and it is our jobs to listen. Ignore the signs and you run the risk of simple symptoms escalating into larger issues.

That said, a daily multivitamin could be the answer to simple deficiencies in the body – but remember to always look for the highest quality brands with close to 100% of the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA),
